Science Night, Fire Fieldtrip and Conferences

I just adore Danny's preschool. I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and I was so pleased that everything I learned in school in how to be developmentally appropriate and how to get the kids to learn has been put into practice at his school. Also his teachers are amazing. They love what they do and it is so evident in how they interact with Danny. Danny loves going 4 times a week and is sad when he is on vacation. I have no idea how I will keep him entertained for 2 weeks for Spring Break.

A couple of months ago they had a science night for the students and their parents. We all went together to make a little Family outing and it was a lot of fun.
This is Ms. Heidi, one of the specialists that works with Danny. She is just so good with him. She is helping him create a volcanic eruption.

They even made ice cream in a bag. Caleb loved helping out with this one- both shaking it in the bag and eating it. It was surprisingly pretty good!

A couple of weeks ago we went on a fieldtrip with Danny's preschool to a local fire station. Danny loved it and was in awe at how big the fire engine was.
Danny all ready to drive away in the fire truck. Isn't his little home-made fireman's hat awesome?!

I love this picture. He just looks so tiny!

Here is Danny and another one of the specialists that works with him, Ms. Dionne. Another fun and amazingly talented teacher.

I just had parent-teacher conferences and all of his teachers say he is doing so well. He has improved so much on his gross motor skills and in his speech. I asked if they think he will do alright in kindergarten. I've agonized over this dilemma- he is really young for his grade- his birthday is in August. Along with that, he is a boy, and he is also behind in his speech. In spite of all of that we had decided to go ahead and register him for kindergarten. The teachers were very encouraging with that decision and said how academically he is doing so well and they think he will be just fine. He is still a bit shy and reserved when it comes to initiating conversation with kids or adults. Usually when he makes friends- he doesn't talk first, he just jumps right in and plays with them. (In my opinion this is also a good strategy) But the teachers said that he also could use some more confidence in speaking out. He has actually improved so much on that- he is constantly talking to adults- the grocery store checker, our neighbors, a waitress. But there is always room for more improvement. So they suggested that he do maybe a team sport to give him the opportunity to practice his motor skills and conversation skills. We're thinking of soccer but we are open to suggestions. =)

So fun! Kindergarten decisions are so tough! I'm totally with you. We signed Andrew up for team soccer. He starts this weekend. We'll see how it goes. I can't believe our boys are so big!

I think that Danny will have a great time in kindergarten with Emily. She talks about being in his class all of the time. Hopefully that still works out. She is on the other end of the age group though since her birthday is in December. I am afraid that she is going to be a bully. She makes friends well, but if they don't play her way, she can be a little mean. Plus she is so tall so she will probably tower over a lot of the kids in her class.

so great that you found a wonderful school. I think soccer is a good choice, although I tried to get Asher to play and I guess he's still a little young because he wanted to stay at my side the whole time! The kindergarten here has a cutoff with the annual year (like Primary) so I'm holding Asher back to have him be the oldest instead of the youngest. I'm sure you'll do the right thing for your little Danny- he's so adorable by the way. OH and you commented on Canyon and I forgot to mention (to you specifically) he's got red hair! Hopefully he's as cute as your little redhead- we shall see.

Jay's birthday is about a week before that kindergarten deadline as well. I have been agonizing over the decision! Jay knows his letters and sounds and he is the best little athlete you could ever see, but he is about a head shorter than all the other kids. He is also the only kid in primary who will momorize his whole talk and then not say one word into the microphone (we have a bazillion experiences like this I could share). We have decided to wait a year. We just felt like he needed that extra confidence. All of his little friends and cousins will be starting kindergarten and I think it will be a tad hard, but overall I feel good about it. I think the best thing you can do is pray about it and then stick with your gut!

P.S. We just made our blog private and I want to add your email to my readers list. Can you email me at izzorch@yahoo.com?

What a fun field trip! I remember in first grade going to the fire station. Actually the most memorable part of the trip was getting ice cream cones on the way back. Weird how some things never change! I still love ice cream the bestest. :) Your kids are so darling!
